Welcome to Fort Stewart-Hunter
Army Airfield

Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield is the U. S. Army’s premier heavy force power projection platform on the East Coast. The mission as a training base and power projection platform involves training, equipping, deploying and redeploying, both early deploying and follow-on active component Army units as well as mobilizing, training, equipping, deploying and redeploying Army National Guard and Army Reserve units and Soldiers.
Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield have consistently proven rapid deployment capabilities in operations ranging from the 1990 Gulf War through subsequent annual deployments to Egypt, Kuwait, Bosnia, Kosovo, and currently to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our primary customer, the 3d Infantry Division is home-based at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. The Installation Management Command is our parent organization. We have adopted the Army and IMCOM’s values as our own and embody them in our daily performance of duty.

Location

Fort Stewart’s cantonment area is located 42 miles southwest of Savannah, Ga. Fort Stewart encompasses 279,270 acres (32 X 17 miles, including parts of five Georgia counties), making it the largest military installation east of the Mississippi River, and it is the largest federal landholding in the state of Georgia.
Hunter Army Airfield is located in Chatham County, adjacent to the southwest side of the city of Savannah. It covers 5,370 acres, and has the Army’s longest runway (11,375 feet long), giving it the capability to accommodate any aircraft in the U.S. air fleet, including the C-17 Globemaster III. This capability is critical to Hunter Army Airfield’s role as a “power projection platform,” or a location from which forces can easily deploy by air or by sea. Hunter Army Airfield is also an alternate landing site for U. S. space shuttles. Hunter Army Airfield is able to deploy forces, such as the Rangers of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment or armor forces of the 3d Infantry Division anywhere in the world with minimal notice.
Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield have easy access to Interstates 16 and 95, key east/west and north/south communication arteries, respectively. Within a 100-mile radius, there are three primary ports and one alternate port of embarkation: Savannah, Ga.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Brunswick, Ga.; and Charleston, SC, respectively.

Deployment Facilities and Capabilities
Fort Stewart has six miles of rail that connect the cantonment area with a CSX Railroad line. The largest military aircraft can land at Hunter, load the largest equipment in Army inventory then deploy the equipment and Soldiers within an 18-hour, wheels-up timeline to contingency operations anywhere around the world.
Hunter’s Truscott Air Terminal is a self-contained Departure Arrival Airfield Control Group Operations Facility. It serves as the focal point for air deployments and provides dramatically improved deployment time and throughput capability for our customers. It was designed based on experience acquired during the 1990 Gulf War. Truscott was the first of its kind, and has been used as a benchmark by many installations.

Training Support
Fort Stewart contains an administrative bivouac area, seven major drop zones, six impact areas, seven tank and armored fighting vehicle gunnery ranges, three live-fire maneuver areas, two Army airfields and one Field Landing Strip. There are 400 miles of tank trails and 246,553 acres of training and maneuver areas that are accessible year round. The availability of land and the mild weather make for an ideal year-round training environment.

Community involvement extends to sharing our recreational assets with local residents. Hunter Army Airfield’s Lotts Island Recreation facility opened to the general public in June 2001 under a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Savannah. This partnership allows the public access to recreational areas, deep-water and a marina. Additionally, two golf courses and three bowling facilities are open to the public. The golf courses host approximately 50,000 rounds and 50 tournaments a year. The Golf Club Professionals conduct free lessons, and have active youth summer programs.
Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are a sportsman’s paradise, have fishing ponds, river landings and hunting areas that make it one of the finest outdoor recreational areas in the state. Fort Stewart’s Fish and Wildlife Division conducts an annual children’s fishing derby that draws children from all over the area. It is also open to the public entertainment activities such as golf tournaments, carnivals, concerts, community marathons and open houses. Such events are well attended. However, community involvement doesn’t end with social and recreational partnering.
Our commitment to the community is to be a good citizen. The Combined Federal Campaign generates charitable contributions to local organizations, and our Chaplains Office’s Toys-4-Tots Christmas gift collection collects gifts for needy children in the local area. Additionally, a cooperative agreement established in early 1940 regarding cemeteries existing before Fort Stewart was established is still on-going. We continuously coordinate for individuals and Family groups to host annual reunions and visits, place markers, research Family records and genealogy.

3rd Infantry Division and Fort Stewart NCO Academy

The United States Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy 3rd Infantry Division and Fort Stewart is located approximately 20 miles north of post headquarters, near the town of Pembroke. The division dedicated approximately 8,600 acres to noncommissioned officer training. The academy complex has 33 structures that include billets, classrooms, office space, exchange annex, barber shop, dining facility and auditorium. The concept of a single NCO leadership course at the primary level originated with the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) NCO Academy.
The academy took the “best of both Primary Leadership Course and Primary Noncommissioned Officer Course Plan of Instructions,” consolidated them into one course and renamed it as Primary Leadership Development Course. Training and Doctrine Command later approved the course for Army wide implementation on July 23, 1982. In October 2005, Primary Leadership Development Course was renamed the Warrior Leader Course. The Warrior Leader Course is now a 17-day course in a fast-paced, stressful, physically demanding, live-in environment.
The academy used to also teach the Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course Phase I (Common Core), but with the graduation of Class 13-09 on Oct. 1, 2009, the BNCOC instructors were reassigned with other duties or to other units. The Army has discontinued all basic and advanced NCO classroom instruction in favor of an online course system available to NCOs through their branch. The online course consists of 80 hours of instruction with a virtual instructor and links on the Web where Soldiers can ask specific questions related to the instruction material. The new system ensures that Soldiers will not return from a 12-month deployment then have to be separated from their Families again in order to attend BNCOC or ANCOC.
The 3rd ID and Fort Stewart NCO Academy’s vision is to train and develop the Army’s future Noncommissioned Officer Corps’ leaders with functional leadership skills set to embrace a “Warrior Ethos,” and exude confidence and competence to perform assigned duties and responsibilities across a broad spectrum in peace and war for the 21st century while achieving victory. The Academy Credo: “To propel the Noncommissioned Corps to the next dimension of leadership excellence by shaping tomorrow, today through positive leadership, Leaders developing Leaders.”
The 3d Infantry Division and Fort Stewart Noncommissioned Officer Academy’s area of responsibility is Region 3, which includes the following geographical areas and installations: Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, Fort Benning, Fort Gillem and Fort McPherson, Georgia; MacDill Air Force Base, Florida; Puerto Rico; Virgin Islands; Guantanamo Bay/Cuba; Joint Forces Command; CENTCOM; SOCOM; SOUTHCOM; FORSCOM; Armed Forces Enlistment Entry Station-East Coast; and the Naval Sea Cadets’ Summer Camp.

The Academy’s Motto is: “Enter to Learn, Leave to Lead”
