Institutes of Higher Education

Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi is a public, degree-granting institution of higher education. Situated on a coastal island, A&M-Corpus Christi’s modern campus serves more than 6,000 students. The University is a member of The Texas A&M University System. It is a comprehensive urban university that focuses on the higher education needs of South Texas and the state; and on county and urban issues, with special emphasis on Allied Health, Applied Technology, Arts and Humanities, Business Administration, Environmental Studies and Teacher Education. Formerly Corpus Christi State University, it opened in September 1973.

The University currently offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs including selected doctoral and professional degrees. The University also provides continuing education and outreach programs that serve the needs of area businesses, professionals and the
general population.

The campus itself is an island-site of 240 acres located at the southern tip of the city on Corpus Christi Bay. Del Mar College offers options in academic, business, occupational, professional and personal development for students focused on improving their future. As a major source of educational opportunities in South Texas, Del Mar serves some 10,000 credit and 15,000 noncredit students each year.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, located on NAS Corpus Christi since 1978, offers Associate, Bachelor and Masters degree programs as part of the Navy College Off-Duty Education program. The undergraduate degrees offered are Professional Aeronautics, Management of Technical Operations, Aircraft Maintenance, and Aviation Maintenance Management. Under-graduate minors are available in safety and logistics. A Master of Science degree is available in Management, and the Master of Aeronautical Science program is available with specializations in Operations, Safety and Management.

Embry-Riddle awards college credit for military schools and experience in accordance with the American Council on Education recommendations. Credit for other accredited colleges and College Level Examination (CLEP) are also accepted. SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY, Building 1731, Room 208, also awards college credit for military schools and experience in accordance with the American Council of Education Guidelines. Degrees offered are: AA/BA: Management; BA: Management/Human Resources/Technology, Management; BS: Computer Information Systems. ECPI COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, Building 1731, Room 217 offers certification programs such as CompTia A+/Network +, MCSE/MCSA, CCNA, Fiber Optic Installer and Designer, as well as online degree programs. ECPI is a Navy College Distance Learning Partnership program member offering rate-related degrees in the information technology field. Call (361)937-6382.

COASTLINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, Building 1731, Room 202, is a Navy College Distance Learning Partnership program member offering rate related associates degrees. CCC awards credit for up to 40 semester hours of military training. All programs are online. CCC also has programs which provide textbooks and reduced tuition for military spouses. Fleet and Family Support Center

Fleet & Family Support Center exists to provide services that facilitate personal and family readiness and adaptation to life in the Navy. Its primary mission is to assist commands reach operational readiness, superior performance, member retention, and a reasonable quality-of-life for Navy personnel and their families.

All active duty personnel and family members arriving or departing will benefit from a visit to the Center. Operating hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some of the more widely utilized and familiar programs/services are:

Counseling. Individual and marriage counseling is provided by fully credentialed and licensed counselors. Counseling is provided on a short-term basis, usually eight sessions or fewer.

Education & Training (E&T). The goal of E&T is to prevent problems and to enrich personal and family life, enabling people to thrive in the Navy and achieve satisfying lives. This is accomplished through workshops, programs, briefings, and general military training given to active duty personnel and their families for the purpose of prevention and enrichment.

Family Advocacy Program (FAP). FAP is a multidisciplinary approach to the prevention and resolution of family maltreatment.
Personal Financial Management Program. Members of the United States Navy and Marine Corps are required to be financially responsible. This program provides comprehensive financial education, training, and counseling. From advice on leasing or buying a home or car, to budgeting and debt management, to questions about insurance, savings, investments or retirement, the Command Financial Specialist is the one to see.

Sexual Assault Victim Intervention Program: Sexual Assault is the most under-reported crime in our society and in the military. The Department of Defense believes its first priority is for victims to be protected, treated with dignity and respect, and to receive the medical treatment, care and counseling they deserve. Under DoD’s Confidentiality Policy, sexual assault victims are offered either restricted or unrestricted reporting options.For additional information on the new reporting options or to report a sexual assault, please contact the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, at (361) 961-1670/3722.

Transition Assistance Management Program (TAMP). This program is open to all military personnel who are either retiring or separating (under honorable conditions). Services offered to military personnel are available to spouses as well. This program is designed to make the transition into civilian life a much smoother and less stressful process.

Among the services offered through seminars, workshops, and one-on-one counseling is information on all aspects of new career development including how to write resumes, survive job interviews, conduct a planned job search, and other job related information. In addition, TAP provides vital information on veteran’s benefits and entitlements, educational benefits, and help available from community-based resources.

Military personnel and their spouses are encouraged to begin their respective transition process 180 days prior to their scheduled separation or retirement date. Plans should be made at this time to attend a scheduled TAP seminar prior to leaving active duty. TAP seminars are transition springboards that should provide sufficient information and guidance to assist the service member in making intelligent and meaningful decisions prior to entering the civilian world.

Family Employment Readiness Program (FERP) is a new term to describe the Spouse Employment Assistance Program. It is designed to ease the significant problems some spouses may have in finding employment. Typical activities include counseling and job search, resume writing, Federal Resume preparations, career transitions, interviewing and career planning, and referrals to potential employers.

Ombudsman Support. This program provides training, support, and information and referral programs that contribute to the effectiveness of the Navy Family Ombudsman Program and personal well-being of ombudsmen. Included are basic, advanced, and ongoing training. Support is provided via the Ombudsman Program Coordinator and other staff who can serve as consultants to discuss interventions and approaches with family issues.

Retired Activities Office (RAO). The RAO is a link between the retiree, local military communities and other government and non-government agencies. It is staffed by retired volunteers trained to assist other retirees, their families and survivors. Objectives are to help retirees solve problems relating to their military service; provide follow-up service directly or by referral to retirees, family members, and survivors ensuring receipt of services and benefits; and to assist in planning and conducting an annual Retiree Seminar.

Relocation Assistance Program. This program assists the servicemember and his/her family members with the relocation process. Assistance is provided according to client’s needs and can be comprised of lecture, pre-move planning assistance, base and community information, local and worldwide and arrival and settling-in services.

Sponsor Training - A self-training program accessible on the Internet. This training will introduce you to the Navy Sponsor Program. It is designed to help facilitate the relocation of Navy servicemembers and their families. The primary goal is to ease difficulty and reduce the apprehensions normally associated with a Permanent Change of Station move.

S.I.TE.S. - A comprehensive database information system that is updated quarterly. It enables servicemembers to retrieve relocation information from DOD installations all over the world. It contains referral information to help transferring servicemembers and their families develop an accurate view and realistic expectations about their new assignments.

Loan Locker - Our loan locker is fully stocked with everything you will need to get by until your household goods arrive. Items include: dish kits, cookware kits, futons, toasters, coffee pots. Items may be borrowed for up to two weeks, but can be extended on a case-by-case basis.

Base Indoctrination - Provides an indoctrination program which familiarizes personnel reporting aboard with the mission, organization, regulations, opportunities, facilities and services at Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas and the surrounding community.

Legal Assistance

Regional Legal Service Office SE, Branch Office Corpus Christi, provides a variety of legal services for eligible active duty personnel and their dependents and, as resources permit, eligible retired personnel and their dependents, who live in South Texas.

Services include, but are not limited to, preparation of wills, powers of attorney, landlord tenant law, notary work and legal advice on domestic relations issues. Call (361) 961-3531 for an appointment. Office hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday. The office is closed from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

Medical Support

Naval Hospital Corpus Christi (NHCC) is a multifaceted patient centered ambulatory care facility dedicated to providing first-rate care to persons entitled to health care according to Department of Defense (DOD) eligibility criteria. NHCC consists of the core facility located in Corpus Christi, Texas and three Naval Branch Health Clinics, each located in Ingleside, Kingsville and Fort Worth, Texas.

Primary Care is the largest focus, with illness intervention requiring hospitalization provided through external resource sharing agreements. Beneficiaries in our system have a Primary Care Manager as a central point of care delivery. Healthcare offers a wide range of outpatient services including: Family Practice, Internal Medicine, General Practice, Pediatrics, Preventive and Occupational Health, Aviation Medicine, Physical Therapy, Wellness Services, Mental Health, Optometry, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Radiology and Immunizations. Specialty clinics include: General Surgery, Orthopedics, and Podiatry.

In addition to its Ambulatory Health Care Accreditation, the Corpus Christi facility has a Behavioral Health Care Accreditation for our Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP). The College of American Pathologies certifies the laboratories. All accreditation standards are met.
On February 17, 2005, Naval Hospital Corpus Christi successfully completed a weeklong combined survey and inspection by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Inspector General.

The Corpus Christi facility is comprised of 367 personnel that include 39 officers, 169 enlisted, 91 civil service, 37 contractors, and 21 reservists. The hospital is an active participant in the TRICARE program, and there are more than 18,000 enrolled TRICARE Prime beneficiaries who account for 120,000 annual encounters.

Navy Exchange

The Navy Exchange is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eligible patrons can shop for a variety of items ranging from clothing, household products and jewelry to garden products, seasonal items, and much more.

A Navy Exchange Uniform Shop is co-located with the Navy Exchange and operates the same hours. A complete mail order service is available for hard-to-find uniform items. For assistance, call 961-3105, extension 28.

A Barber Shop and Beauty Shop are also located in Building 1744 and are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Services for both shops are available to military personnel and their dependents. For appointments, call the barbershop at 961-7032 and the beauty shop at 961-7981.

The Citco Service Station is located at the NEX Mini Mart, Bldg. 1290 and is open seven days a week. Gas sales, a quick mart and Budget Truck Rental are available at the station. To reach the service station, call 937-7237.

An Optical Shop is available in the basement of Hospital Building 100. It is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday. Call 961-3187.

Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society

The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Corpus Christi office provides assistance to Navy and Marine Corps active duty, retirees and their dependents. Financial assistance is available for food, shelter, utilities, medical expenses, emergency travel, necessary “road safe” car repairs, and dental expenses for dependents (including some orthodontics), funeral expenses and other unforeseen emergencies.

Also available: Visiting Nurse Service offering house calls and instruction to mothers with newborns, retirees and widows/widowers; Combat Casualty Visiting Nurses providing long-term case management, health and resource information and emotional support to the families of service members affected by the war; Debit Cards for use during evacuation resulting from natural disasters; Thrift Shop offering gently used items at low costs – including uniforms; Baby’s First Sea Bag (Budgeting for Baby)

Financial counseling is available at no cost to military families and their dependants. Hours of assistance are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday-Friday. After-hours emergencies may call (toll-free) 877-272-7337.

The society needs and wants volunteers from both the enlisted and officer communities. Reimbursement for childcare and mileage are available for volunteers. We welcome your help!

Personnel Support Activities

The Navy Personnel Support Activity Detachment (PSD), Corpus Christi, is responsible for providing consolidated pay, personnel, travel and transportation services for active duty, reserve and retired personnel and their families located throughout south and central Texas. The Human Relations Office, located on the second floor, provides personnel services for Navy civil service employees. General customer service hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Support is provided from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

ID cards can be issued for eligible Navy personnel and dependents in room 108 of Building 1730 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; and from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Wednesday. ID cards are issued to new Army Depot employees in Building 1727

Corpus Christi Bay Club offers fine dining and daily lunch specials with an elegant atmosphe­­re and wide selection of menu items. Located in Building 90, the consolidated club is open to all base employees and their guest for lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday- Friday. Wednesday through Friday sandwiches are served in the bar till 10 pm.. Friday dinner is served from 5 p.m to 8:30 p.m. The Club will open for catered events Monday through Saturday for 50 or more guest. Call (361) 961-2541 for more information.

Game On Sports Pub offers great food, fun and sports games for all ages. Game On Sports Pub is located in Building 149. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call (361) 961-2249 to place your order for Dine In or Carry Out.
