Family Housing
Government-owned family housing at CBC consists of seven sets of married officer quarters and 365 units of married enlisted quarters. The officer quarters complex consists of three single houses and two duplexes.
The 365 units of married enlisted quarters consist of 16 five-bedroom units and 84 four-bedroom units that are all townhouses. There are also 185 three-bedroom houses, 70 two-bedroom houses and 10 four-bedroom units that are duplexes.
Waiting lists for all the houses are maintained at the Housing Welcome Center. Personnel receiving orders to CBC or its tenant commands can make advance application, in writing, for quarters. Control date is the date of detachment from prior command. Housing assignment is available to all pay grades based on family composition. DD Form 1746, Application for Assignment to Military Family Housing, should be available at any housing or personnel office. The application MUST be accompanied by a copy of the individual’s transfer orders and Page 2, Record of Emergency Data. New arrivals are encouraged to apply for the waiting list in order to qualify for a government-paid move onto the base from community housing. If application is not received within 30 days of assignment, the move will not be funded.
The Housing Welcome Center provides a service to assist military of all grades moving into the Gulfport area in locating suitable off-base housing if government housing is not available. There are private rentals available on the local market. The rent for three bedroom homes average $1000-$1200 per month, plus utilities.
A deposit may be required for utilities and could total approximately $300. All personnel, regardless of organization to which assigned, must clear through the Housing Welcome Center prior to making a commitment for private rental housing in the local community.
Rates for temporary housing vary with the seasons. The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a popular summer resort area and finding affordable
temporary off-base housing becomes more critical from April through September. The Rental Partnership Program assists military members with rental of suitable community housing at a cost below market rates. Contact the Housing Welcome Center to participate.
For further information, write the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Code 20.1, 5209 CBC Blower Street, Gulfport, Mississippi 39501-5001; or call 228-871-2586 or DSN 868-2586. Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Fax number is DSN 868-2453.
Gulfport was selected as the ITRO training site for Army, Navy and Air Force students in October of 1995 and became the sole carpentry/masonry (Builder “A” School) apprentice training site. Navy Steelworker “A” School was also conducted exclusively at NCTC Gulfport.
With the Navy’s Revolution in Training, NCTC Gulfport became a part of the Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering (CSFE). Since 2004, NCTC Gulfport has been an echelon V command and continues to provide support for the detachments at Sheppard AFB, TX and Fort Leonardwood, MO. Following Hurricane Katrina, NCTC Gulfport worked with CSFE to ensure continuity of training during the restoration of damaged facilities. Fiscal Year 2006 student throughput reached nearly 12,000 Seabees, Soldiers and Airman, trained and ready in basic and advanced skills.
With recapitalization efforts underway to rebuild after the storm, and expected increases in the students coming through the training pipeline, the challenges ahead may change, but in over 40 years of training our basic mission has not. Skill through knowledge remains our motto and the focus for success.
