WELCOME to the Navy at Stennis Space Center!
The Navy is among more than 30 state and federal agencies located at the John C. Stennis Space Center (SSC) in northern Hancock County near Bay St. Louis. The Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command and its subordinates, the Naval Oceanographic Office, the Navy Oceanography Operations Command, Fleet Survey Team, Naval Oceanography Anti-Submarine Warfare Center and Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Professional Development Detachment South, a detachment of the Naval Research Laboratory, the Navy Human Resources Services Center Southeast, Special Boat Team 22, and the Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School constitute the Navy presence at this unique federal city.

MISSION
Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command
Headed by a rear admiral, this is the only operational flag command in the State of Mississippi.
Naval Oceanography provides global meteorology, oceanographic, meteorological and maritime geospatial environmental information and services critical for safe and effective operations of the Navy and Marine Corps and Department of Defense. The Naval Meterology and Oceanography Command recently reorganized from regional operations to an information-centric organization aligned to the Navy’s five warfighting disciplines – Anti-Submarine Warfare; Special Warfare; Mine Warfare; Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance; and Fleet Operations (Strike and Expeditionary) – as well as the following warfighting support disciplines: Navigation, Precise Time and Astrometry, Maritime Operations and Aviation Operations.
The worldwide organization comprises some three thousand officer, enlisted and civilian personnel at a number of activities located around the world.

Naval Oceanographic Office
For more than 175 years, the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) has been responsible for providing oceanographic products andservices to all elements within the Department of Defense (DoD).
NAVOCEANO utilizes airborne, surface and subsurface platforms deployed worldwide, remote-sensing satellites and seaborne buoys, to collect data around the world.
Global ocean and littoral data are analyzed on scene and in house by NAVOCEANO experts, who then convert the data into specialized, operationally significant products and services, which are tailored to the warfighters’ needs. Available for warfighters and civilian, national and international customers, these products and services support virtually every type of Fleet operation by providing mission essential information to the warfighter 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week.
Comprised of approximately 1,100 military and contractor personnel, NAVOCEANO is the largest subordinate command within the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. From its location at Stennis Space Center, NAVOCEANO oversees the Naval Ice Center in Suitland, Md., and the Fleet Survey Team, also at Stennis Space Center.

Warfighting Support Center
From data collection through production and analysis, the NAVOCEANO Warfighting Support Center (WSC) remains ready to prepare the warfighter’s maritime battlespace.
The WSC’s 24-hour customer support provides warfighters with the near-real-time environmental analyses of the battlespaces they face, whether it is near shore, deep water or anywhere in between.
Experts at NAVOCEANO use satellite imagery, computer models, and environmental databases and other products created at NAVOCEANO to create specialized products that are delivered to the warfighter in time for use in operational and tactical decisionmaking.
Many unclassified oceanographic products are available at https://www.navo.navy.mil.

Major Shared Resource Center
The NAVOCEANO Major Shared Resource Center (MSRC) for High Performance Computing serves the nation as one of the premier supercomputing centers in the world today. The MSRC provides a scientific computing environment that serves thousands of scientists and engineers throughout the nation engaged in research and development, testing and evaluation activities for the DoD. The MSRC provides critical support for worldwide Navy and DoD operations as one of the world’s most capable high performance computing environments for high-resolution modeling and simulation of global-scale oceanography and meteorology.
In January 2007, the MSRC completed a series of upgrades that increased computing capability to approximately 70 trillion operations per second.
The NAVOCEANO MSRC Visual Analysis and Data Interpretation Center (VADIC) is another key element of the MSRC. The VADIC merges advanced data visualization and analysis tools, techniques and an expert staff with one of the world’s premier computing and data management environments.

Matthew Fontaine Maury Oceanographic Library
With more than 400,000 volumes of information, NAVOCEANO’s Matthew Fontaine Maury Oceanographic Library contains the world’s foremost military collection of physical oceanography materials. A valuable resource for scientists in government, academia and industry, the library is noted for the technical diversity of its holdings, which includes modern media as well as handwritten 18th century ships’ logs.
The Maury Library is open Monday through Friday (closed federal holidays) 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and serves the Navy, DoD, federal agencies, universities and Stennis Space Center tenants. It participates in an active interlibrary loan program for those outside Stennis Space Center. For more information, call the Maury Library circulation desk at (228) 688-4597.

Educational and Community Outreach
Through its Community Service Program, NAVOCEANO provides local schools and educational organizations with science- and math-related education resources, including handouts, science fair judges and classroom speakers.
NAVOCEANO personnel also serve as speakers for area professional and civic organizations on a variety of topics, including oceanography, engineering, bathymetry, hydrographic survey operations, remote sensing techniques, acoustics and Command programs and activities.

Fleet Survey Team
Comprised of civilian and military personnel The Fleet Survey Team (FST), located at Stennis Space Center, is a rapid-response team with capabilities to conduct hydrographic surveys within two to three days. Able to perform quick-turnaround surveys, FST provides timely products to the warfighter anywhere in the world.
The on-scene data collected and processed by the team provide the Navy with the best graphic depictions of potential hazards to navigation. The team, uses data from tactical mine-hunting sensors, including unmanned underwater vehicles; deploys with the mine countermeasure squadrons to characterize the littoral battlespace; and provides tactical support via technologies like change detection.
FST is also actively involved in south Mississippi and southeast Louisiana communities, where they frequently assist schools and civic organizations. In 2006, FST members served as classroom speakers, science fair judges and civic speakers and assisted in building community playgrounds.
